In most cases, yes. Original oak strip flooring from that era was milled thicker than what’s sold today, which usually means there’s enough wood left to sand and refinish even after 80+ years of wear. We’ll inspect your floors in person and tell you honestly whether refinishing, repair, or replacement makes the most sense.
We just pulled up carpet in our Fairway home and found original hardwood underneath. Now what?
That’s one of our favorite calls to get. Carpet actually protects hardwood from UV fading and foot traffic, so floors that have been covered for decades are often in better shape underneath than you’d expect. We’ll assess the boards, check for water damage or loose staples, and walk you through what refinishing will take to bring them back.
Will refinishing change the character of our original 1930s or ’40s floors?
Not if it’s done right. We match stain color and sheen to preserve the warmth and grain pattern original to homes from that era, rather than pushing a modern, uniform look onto a floor that’s supposed to have some history in it.
